No Surrender
Bruce Springsteen

Well, we bursted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a 3-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down

Chorus:
Well, we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Well, now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
Now I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yards
Well maybe we'll cut someplace of own
With these drums and these guitars

'Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in the stormy night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath
Peaceful skies in my lover's bed
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head

Once we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in a stormy night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Here's the text of Barack Obama's speech to the Convention last night - what a hell of a speech! Talk about energizing.

Star Wars III script leaked! Very funny stuff.

HOLY NEATO!

I've always maintained that The Olive Garden sucks, and it's not like that's a maverick opinion, but here's aninteresting article about Marcella Hazan's experience eating there and an even more scathing piece by James Morrow. Now, to track down some decent Italian food in Tampa...

Went with a few friends to see The Two Johns last night (no, not They Might Be Giants). Speechifying was universally excellent, especially Edwards. I've never seen him speak in person before - DANG is he good. About 2,000 people made it into the St. Pete Coliseum, and a crowd of many more waited outside.

There was a group of 40 or 50 GOP protesters (yes, I counted them myself) holding the lamest signs I've ever seen. They're all obviously getting their sign-making tips from the RNC, because their message was pretty consistently "JOHN KERRY = FLIP FLOPPER". I mean, that's the best you've got, people? They had one moron dressed up in a dolphin costume with a sign that said "I'm a Flipper too!". It was about 90 degrees out, even at 9pm, and this kid's wearing a plush dolphin costume - he looked like a sweaty refugee from a Furry convention.

All in all, an exciting and fun time - it really seemed to energize everyone there.

Well, June is finally over - it seemed like at least three months packed into one. I'm back in DC for the holiday, and while it's nice to be out of the Florida heat (and daily torrential downpours, and huge flying insects, and lizards, and Floridians), it's almost a little strange to be back here.

Hope everyone else out there is having a lovely holiday weekend.
